Maxime Goldstyn est une artiste interdisciplinaire basée à Montréal. Son travail conjugue peintures, dessins et installations sculpturales. Telle une brèche qui relie le tangible et l’imaginaire, son imagerie oscille entre l’étrange et le familier : les animaux se dévorent les uns les autres, les festins inspirent autant luxuriance que dégoût, les fleurs se décomposent; le tout sous l’œil ennuyé des personnages impassibles. On y dénote unetrame narrative, une histoire de fond, sans toutefois parvenir à la saisir.

Par le biais de la représentation, Goldstyn cherche à figer l’altérable, à résoudre les dualités qui l’habitent et à capturer l’essence des images volatiles. Son travail est dicté par une sensibilité émotionnelle et une mythologie personnelle qui établissent l’étrangeté comme état définitif de la condition humaine, animale et végétale. Inspirées par l’inquiétante étrangeté de l’expressionnisme allemand et le grotesque du Moyen-Âge, ses œuvres représentent des symboles évoquant des fantasmes réprimés et des cauchemars oubliés.

Maxime Goldstyn is an interdisciplinary artist based in Montréal. Their work combines painting, drawing, and sculptural installations. By interweaving the tangible and the eeriness, their imagery oscillates between strangeness and familiar: animals devour one another, feasts inspire delight as well as disgust, flowers are decomposing; all under the tired eye of the impassible characters. Each artwork depicts a narrative, an elusive background story that can be interpreted in many ways, but never fully seized.

Through representation, Goldstyn seeks to capture the essence of fleeting images, to resolve the dualities that inhabit their mind, and to perpetuate what is transient. Their work is dictated by an emotional sensibility and a personal mythology that establish uncanniness as the definite state of everything human, animal or vegetal. Inspired by the darkness of German Expressionism and the grotesque of medieval art, Goldstyn creates symbols evoking repressed fantasies and buried nightmares.
